Making of: Game of Thrones Dragon Puppet Update 1

So there was this book series…that eventually became a TV series, maybe you’ve heard of it. GoTLogo

It’s pretty awesome if you’re in to the fantasy genre, plus it has DRAGONS!

ShoulderDragon
Aw isn’t he cute? He just hatched.

So Amanda K of Amanda K Cosplay commissioned me to make her a shoulder dragon puppet to go with the Daenerys Targaryen cosplay that she’s currently making.

Feed-Dragons
The final puppet will resemble the one pictured here. No you cannot feed it treats.

And away we go!

First step: Wire Armature.

It’s hard to tell how excited Amanda is from this picture.
The answer is VERY excited.

Step Two: Body Form Buildup

After attaching the wire skeleton to my wood base I got to work making a body form with some aluminium foil.

This process is mostly folding and wrapping the aluminum foil around the wire armature.

Ready for some clay!

Step Three: Clay Buildup

Since dealing with clay is not really an “inside of the house” activity, I set shop just outside back door.

DragonClayProcess
I don’t usually get to work outside. Good thing it wasn’t too hot.
DragonClayBuildUp
Since this is just the initial body build up I didn’t worry to much about the initial shape the dragons body form took on. Most of that clay will be shaved and raked away in the next step anyway.
ClayDragonBack
He’s got some fat thighs…good thing this is just the initial body form.

Stay tuned for Update 2, which includes fixing the wing shapes and making his body look a little less pudgy.

Sidenote: Go check out Amanda K’s Zelda cosplay, it’s pretty awesome!
